The Title
Names and details changed to protect identities.
Field log, entry 081. Back at the desk. The notebooks are stacked higher than the lamp.
I laid the conversations out side by side. No two of these people said the same thing, and every one of them said the same thing.
- The instructor: make the problem smaller than the fear.
- The operator: you've been in the room before.
- The analyst: the change is the signal.
- The medic: the math doesn't work unless somebody on scene does something.
- The tracker: when you're lost, stop.
- The survivor: pick the place you'll meet before you need it.
- The communications specialist: a plan you made before.
- The team leader: everybody gets a job.
- The planner: plan to stay, be ready to go.
- The owner: slow is smooth.
Under all of it, the index card was still clipped to the edge of the desk.
In the gap, no one is coming. Whoever is there has to know what to do.
Whoever is there is you.
The book took longer than I planned. It grew to two volumes, because the gap holds a lot: water, food, heat, medicine, navigation, communications, and the people beside you. But every page was written for the same reader: a regular person in a regular house, in the hours before help arrives.
There was only ever one title. Every one of those conversations had already given it to me.
No One Is Coming.
