No One Is Coming

After Closing

Names and details changed to protect identities.

Two soldiers in helmets seen from behind in drifting dust at dusk; the older one rests a gloved hand on the younger one's shoulder.
Slow is smooth. Illustration. Not the actual people.

Field log, entry 074. A hardware store after closing. The owner, a former team leader, counted the register drawer the whole time and looked up only once.

I asked my last question the way I'd asked it everywhere: is there one thing someone said to you that you can't shake?

"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." That was the one time the owner looked up. "I know. It's on coffee mugs now. But I heard it at about the worst moment of my life, so it's mine."

Everything had been going sideways. Rushing, fumbling, dropping the one thing that was needed, twice. Then an older man nearby put a hand on the owner's shoulder and said it quietly, "like he's ordering lunch."

"I took one breath. One. And my hands came back."

There was never a chance to thank that man. That still bothers the owner.

"Calm's contagious. Panic's contagious too. You get to pick which one you're passing around. That's what I'd want in your book."

Then back to counting, and one more story. When a new kid drops a box of nails all over aisle three and starts to panic, the owner walks over, puts a hand on the kid's shoulder, and says it the same way.

"He thinks I made it up. I let him."
