The Photograph on the Shelf

Names and details changed to protect identities.

Field log, entry 052. A living room. On the shelf, a framed photograph of a house. The house in the photograph doesn't stand anymore.

Everyone else on my list had training. This person had a before and an after.

"Walk me through the first seventy-two hours," I said.

Day one, the survivor said, was almost exciting, and then apologized for saying so. Adrenaline. Everybody out in the street, helping, sharing. "It felt like a block party with the world on fire."

Day two was quiet. Water off. Phones dead. Rumors: the bridge is gone; the bridge is fine. "You don't know what's true. That's the worst part, not knowing."

Day three, people got mean. Not bad people. Thirsty, scared people who hadn't slept. Someone took a neighbor's generator right out of his yard. "Guy I'd waved at for six years."

What would have helped? Water: "Whatever you think, triple it." Cash in small bills, because nothing with a card works when the power's out. A paper map, with a spot circled where everybody meets.

I asked why the map, and the survivor's voice caught.

A daughter at school, across town. Two days without knowing where she was. They had never talked about it. Never once said, If something happens, go here. She was fine. "But those two days were worse than losing the house. By a mile."

Then, because people who have been through it learn to laugh at it: a big, expensive movie knife, and no can opener. Forty cans of soup and a screwdriver. "Buy the can opener. Buy two."

I sat in my car outside for a long time before I drove away.

There's no picture with this chapter. The only one that belongs here is the one on that shelf, and it isn't mine to show.

Those three days, the excitement, the quiet and the meanness, shaped how the book is built. The water, the cash and the paper map all trace back to that living room. So does the meeting place. The book asks every family to pick theirs, and say it out loud, before they need it.
